A case of avian influenza was confirmed in Japan, with the country's agricultural ministry saying it is the country's first case of bird flu in three years. The highly pathogenic strain of the virus was detected at a farm in Kumamoto prefecture on the south-western island of Kyushu. Japanese media reports that 1,100 chickens have died due to the disease, and about 112,000 would be culled. The ministry has also been warning farmers about infection risks, citing the continued spread of the disease in Korea and other areas of Asia.¡á
